Billy Ray Cryus(Biography)

Country Music Highway is a National Scenic Byway created to honor the extraordinary number of musicians who were born along a seven county stretch in scenic Eastern Kentucky. Greenup County is proud that Country Music Highway star Billy Ray Cryus hails from Flatwoods, Kentucky in Greenup County. Billy Ray's claim to fame includes starring roles in the TV show Doc, as well as the hit song "Achy Breaky Heart" (the song which launched his career).

Billy Ray Cyrus is proud to call Flatwoods his hometown and Flatwoods/Greenup County is proud to have Billy Ray Cryus as a native son.

Greenup County has many attractions that make it a great place to come visit. If you have read any of the late great Jesse Stuart books (Jesse was a native citizen as well as resident of Greenup County until his death), you will get a sense of the rustic beauty, simple but genuine people, and the sense of pride that permeates rural Appalachia. In fact, Stuart's farm still exists and can be toured on your visit.

Another major attraction is Greenbo Lake State Resort Park . Greenbo Lake is one of Kentucky's prime fishing spots and two state record large mouth bass have been harvested from its waters. In addition, its secluded lodge features a Jesse Stuart reading room, as well as, the perfect place to come rest and recharge your batteries.

So, when you get a chance, drop by Greenup County in person, and let us show you what makes the area so special.
